Those used eyeglasses can now help Oregonians

For 60 years, the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation has been collecting used eyeglasses (and hearing aids) for distribution to needy people around the world — but of an estimated 100,000 collected annually in Oregon, none could go to Oregonians.

As the result of House Bill 2312 — a ceremonial signing by Gov. John Kitzhaber took place Monday on the Capitol steps — the foundation starting on Jan. 1 would be shielded from liability for damages for distributions of used eyeglasses and hearing aids. (The exemption applies to eyeglasses prescribed by an optometrist/ophthalmologist, who has examined the person scheduled to receive the eyeglasses.
